Nor
'Easter In
February 2001, we had a real nor 'easter of the legendary variety here
in Connecticut. I wanted very much to be able to capture the actual
flakes as they appeared in real life in my photograph.
It is my hope that the photo brings the viewer inside the storm and
that he/she can actually feel the cold of the swirling snow and wind. I
found the contrast between the density of the cedar tree in the
foreground with the wispiness of the deciduous trees in the background
rather intriguing, as well.
Something about this photograph puts me in mind of the kind of serenity
one feels in oriental pieces.

The
landscape may be captured in many ways...sometimes from a distance and
sometimes from a very personal close-up perspective. The
photo above falls into the latter category.

| Barn
Hill Road Because we are
situated very high up, we always catch the first breeze that comes
by. So, when there's a storm, especially a nor 'easter, it seems
the wind adds to the blizzard. So it was on the day I took this
photo looking out the front dining room window towards Barn Hill Road. |

Lisa's House The yellow house in
this photo is a remodeled farm house that has been in the Shelton
family for generations. We live somewhat a bit north and east on
a piece of land that originally belonged to this farm. The day I took
this photo was another one of those "blizzard days". If you look
carefully, on the right of the house is a vehicle trying to make it's
way home on the snow covered road. I always thought this photo
reminded me of a Christmas card. |

Outside
the Studio Door eThe time of year is evident in this
photo taken outside my studio door. I have photographed this view
many times in many different seasons and each one brings a unique
quality to the scene. The land in back gently slopes down to a
pond and beyond the pond is some rock ledge on which the farm beyond is
built. I have always loved the colors of autumn and this real New
England landscape makes the case.

Snow Day The local school
systems traditionally cancel or delay school whenever there is a
substantial snowfall which would hamper the transportation of
students. This was such a day. Our grandson, Elliot and our
dog, Kasha are seen here enjoying their day together as children and
dogs are wont to do. The fact that the snow made it difficult for
them to navigate on foot, seems not to have put a damper on their fun. |
|
| The Embrace I was
photographing the aftermath of one of our
snowstorms today, when the two trees outside the studio door, which I
have seen a thousand times over, caught my eye. I saw them in an
entirely new perspective and tried to photograph my vision. Trees
have always held a fascination for me since the time my college
professor assigned me to endless hours outdoors, sketching all manner
of them. These two had a distinctly "human" quality, I thought. |

Those Were
The Days Many
years ago, there was a gas station on Leavenworth Road in the White
Hills
section of Shelton (better known today as Route 110.) At some
point,
the station was knocked down, probably for lack of business, and for
some
reason, the naked skeleton of a gas pump with the amount of the last
recorded
sale remained. Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated
by
the mechanical workings of objects and even used to push the eyes of my
dolls into their heads to determine what made them blink open and
shut.
It was a very natural thing for me to find this subject interesting
enough
to photograph. (Although this photo has suffered some degradation,
I
felt compelled to include it in this compilation of my photography.) |
