Genesis This 24" X 36" acrylic on stretched canvas is the second in a new series of paintings.  My early intense study of the life and work of the artist, Amedeo Modigliani, left a lasting impression on me which makes itself  felt in this painting.  His "Caryatids" were a strong influence (albeit subconscious), on the position of the nude in the piece.   It depicts a woman in the act of initiating a life form by planting it in the earth.  It will be nurtuted to maturity by both the warmth of the sun and the rain which is falling gently in the background. This was painted on a gallery wrapped canvas and the sides are painted, giving the collector the option of framing it in the traditional way, or hanging it "as is."
Montezuma's Reverie  is painted on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper. This abstract watercolor measures 10"X14" on the outer edge.  I employed a very opaque, non wet-on-wet technique in the execution of this abstract, therefore rendering the colors in a very vivid palette, as opposed to the softer look one usually expects from a watercolor.  The Aztec connection seemed very much a part of the chartacter of the painting and as a result, I named it "Montezuma's Reverie".  Some comments voiced about the work were, "It reminds me of the 70's", "It has a quality of the desert".

Pinball This abstract painting is a 14"X10" watercolor painted on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper.  The blue frame was added to the photo for display purposes only and does not come with the painting.
(A signature was added to the piece after it was photographed.)  Primary colors, with the addition of a secondary green  were used to abstractly depict the movement and feeling of a pinball machine.  When I was a young child, my family used to spend summers in Rockaway, NY and I still remember the arcades on the boardwalk where I encountered my first pinball machine.  This piece is a tribute to those days of  ocean waves, boardwalk splinters, and the cool sand on my feet under the boardwalk.

Strawberry Earth, Blueberry Sky / Dancing Dandelions
When my grandson first saw this painting, he dubbed it "Dancing Dandelions"; that after I had already entitled it.  I was very taken with his perception and decided to include it here in addition to my original choice.  This 14"X10" watercolor was rendered on Arches 140lb. cold press paper.  The vibrant colors have been applied more opaquely than most watercolorists do, but it suits the subject rather well.  The painting has a spring-like quality and speaks of rebirth, renewal, and joy.  In a time when we are all unsure of our future, this painting optimistically represents the continuum of life and hope.

Remembering Vincent  This painting is a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh and his original work, Starry Night, which has haunted artists, including me, since he first painted it.  Although my painting is a daytime image, the original eleven stars, cypress trees, and sense of movement remain part of my rendition. There is a theory that the story of Joseph in the Old Testament may have influenced the composition of Starry Night.

"Look, I have had another dream", he said, "I thought I saw the sun, moon, and eleven stars, bowing to me"  Genesis 37:10

A New Day  I watched George Bush's speech yesterday in which he announced that we would be going to war in Iraq.  I have always been opposed to any kind of violence.  I had painted the sun and the water in this painting during an afternoon which promised Spring here in the northeast, and the sky in the evening during the speech.  The sky has a rather ominous feeling to it as compared to the lightness of feeling in the rest of the painting.  This watercolor measures 14"X10" and is rendered on Arches 140 lb. cold press paper.  The colors are a very close approximation to those on the original painting and may vary slightly from the original, depending on how you have your monitor adjusted.
